Having finished his studies in Rome for the time being, Fr Calistus expects to work among the Maasai people who live on the Tanzania – Kenya border. They are a nomadic, pastoral people, whose wealth is measured by the number of cattle they possess. As “civilisation” encroaches on their ancestral territories their traditional way of life is becoming more and more difficult to sustain. The government is encouraging them to settle in villages, where they will have space to pasture their cattle, but lead a more sedentary life.

With their colourful costumes and vibrant culture the Maasai have a romantic image, but the reality of their life is very harsh, lacking basic amenities like clean water and health care. It is the Church which is helping them to improve their standard of living, being careful at the same time not to destroy their native culture.
